Vocal Abuse Checklist...

If you use your voice for professional purposes you should be aware of some factors which affect your professional performance. Here is a checklist...
  1. Do you smoke?
  2. Do you drink a lot of alcohol?
  3. Do you argue a lot?
  4. Do you cough excessively?
  5. Do you clear your throat a lot?
  6. Are you an extrovert personality?
  7. Do you spend a long time talking on the telephone?
  8. Do you laugh a lot?
  9. Do you whisper when you feel as if you have lost your voice?
  10. Do you live in a noisy house?
  11. Do you have to shout from one end of the house to the other?
  12. Do you talk over loud noises constantly? Radio. Television?
  13. Do you call pets or children from a distance?
  14. Do you shout at sporting events?
  15. Is your work vocally demanding?
  16. Do you sing along to the radio in the car or talk over it?
  17. Do you sing in a band or choir regularly?
  18. Do you take a lot of drying medication such as anti- cold medicine?
  19. Do you talk in a smoky or dusty environment?
  20. Do you talk a lot when you are out socially?
As voice user some of this is inevitable, but if you are doing most of these things, then you are using your voice excessively and need to factor in some vocal rest time. Numbers 4 and 5 are warning signs which will increase without relevant action. Number 9 is an incorrect way to deal with vocal loss!
